Winter Summary 2008

For the 4th time in the clubs history, and the first time since 2003, Manly Breakers entered a side in the Sydney Morning Cricket Association winter competition, this competition has been reasonably successful for the Breakers with a string of finals appearances over the years. Given previous success the Breakers were put straight back into Div. 4 of a 10 division competition, which proved to be an appropriate grading.
The winter competition is a slightly varied form of the game, with each side allowed to play 10 players, though only 9 may field and bat. Matches are 36 over per innings one-day matches played every second week on Saturdays or Sundays. The Breakers adapted well in this form of the game to post 4 wins from their 7 round matches, and finish 2nd, setting up a semi final show down with the 3rd placed “The Ferns” who the Breakers had lost to in their round 7 encounter.
The semi final encounter was a good match, with the Breakers scoring a very solid total of 8 for 219 from their 36 overs… with notable batting performances by Gunasehar (26), Williams (41), Christie (25), Lavery (32) and Thomas (58). The Breakers defence started in the best possible way with Fisher sending the middle stump cartwheeling with the first ball of the innings, “The Ferns” were bowled out for a paltry 192 with 3 wickets to Fisher, and 1 each to Sweet, Williams, Gunasehar, Lavery, Moore and Ball. The Breakers progressed to their first Winter comp grand final, and would come up against VI/SA Australia, a team that was certainly playing well below their division.
The final was a torrid affair with VI/SA scoring 200 on a slow but even wicket. This was always going to be a tough score to chase, amongst the wickets were Lavery with 5, Gunasehar with 2, and Walker with 1. In reply the Breakers could only manage 99, with Christie top scoring with 27, and Lavery, Walker and Mullineaux making double figures. A disappointing loss, but a good season was had.
