On a cold morning, with dew covered ground, Vintage Troopers won the toss and elected to bat. In the absence of John Edgtton, Matt Baird was given the new ball in his first game. He bowled good line and length and was rewarded with 3-15 from his 6 overs. James Foye was also given his first bowl in a competition match and returned impressive figures of 1-12 from 6 overs.
Showing considerably more discipline than in past weeks, Manly Breakers A bowling attack produced only 11 wides rather than the 35 of their previous game. This resulted in restricting the opposition to 121/all out. Paul Reece was outstanding in the field, taking 2 good catches and executing a quick thinking assisted run out after he dropped a third. For Vintage Troopers, R. Lawther batted solidly for 38, and their captain, A. Dadswell, despite being dropped 4 times managed to edge his way to 28. Best bowling: Matt Baird (3-15), Terry Nicholson (2-15), James Foye (1-12)
In usual fashion, Manly Breakers A batting collapsed dismally. Chasing a small target seems to be a major problem for this team. Matthew Roger (5) and Nathan Walker (16) opened the batting and began well, but when Matt was caught and bowled by a screamer of a catch in the 3rd over, the inevitable happened. Apart from Nathan's two big sixes, no other batsman had any reply to the average bowling attack until Terry Nicholson came to the crease with the score on 5-44. He watched from the other end as S. Geftakis took 3 wickets in 4 balls by throwing pies to end up with 5-12.
Terry was eventually dismissed for 29, caught at 1st slip to a catch that had no right to be taken. He chased a very wide ball (as the umpire refused to call wides against Vintage Troopers) which came off the toe of the bat. It flew at a rate of knots through the keepers gloves and somehow lodged in an unsighted 1st slips hands. The fall of his wicket saw Manly Breakers A all out for 78. Top scorers: Terry Nicholson (29), Nathan Walker (16), Extras (10). Best bowling: S. Geftakis (5-12), P. Witherley (2-30)
