Stumps (by Karen Nicholson)
On Saturday, June 21, Manly Breakers A won the toss and sent Glebe Friend in Hand Mullets in
to bat. After continual improvement, John Edgtton (1-17) was rewarded with 1st use of the new
ball. He picked up the first wicket with the score on 9 in the third over. However, more than
75% of the runs were extras. This was to be the platform for the day's proceedings. At the
drinks break, the score was 2-111 and drastic changes needed to be made. This saw the
introduction of Nathan Walker (2-38) and Terry Nicholson (0-13) into the attack. Once again
the tight bowling and excellent ground fielding saw wickets fall as Glebe lost 5-41.
(Mark Cleal executed a brilliant direct hit run out from the outfield.) As always,
David Lang (1-31) was consistent, but S. Boniface's 70, bowled off the last ball,
6 dropped catches and too many extras helped build glebes total to 209 all out.
Top scorers: S. Boniface (70), Extras (53), S. Dolan (23). Bowling: J. Edgtton
(1-17), N. Walker (2-38), D. Lang (1-31).
There is not much to be said for the Manly Breakers batting performance other than perhaps
a long net session is required. Knowing they were chasing a run rate of 5.8 from the outset,
all players seemed to have the attitude of "going down swinging". Except for T. Campy, the
Glebe attack appeared quite harmless, but all top order batsmen got themselves out "caught"
trying to push the run rate. The innings highlights were Rob Spit's 38, 5 penalty runs for
the ball hitting a drink bottle and David Lang avoiding a personal king pair by recording a
third ball duck. (He tells me he has scored a total of 1 run in his last 6 at bats).
Top scorers: R. Spit (38), P. Reece (21), T. Nicholson (18). Bowling: D. Gibson (2-24),
T. Campy (1-12), A. Miller (1-12).
