STUMPS (by Karen Nicholson)
After a close loss in the first game, and a washout in the second, Manly Breakers A were keen as mustard to get on the paddock. When fill in player Dave Hore (1-11) took a wicket with his 2nd ball, the Manly Breakers A decision to send West Ashfield B in appeared to be the right one. From that point however, the fortunes seemed to change. Assisted by 2 dropped catches in the 6th over, many small partnerships developed, with the run rate staying around 4 per over. Just when it looked like West Ashfield B was going to get away from them, some tight bowling from Terry Nicholson (1-13) and Paul Reece (0-9) sparked a Manly Breakers A revival. Pressure was created on the batsmen to push the run rate which resulted in A. Apokis being run out for 32. Lack of support for him and lack of numbers saw West Ashfield B's last batsman out with the score on 83, when David Lang (1-1) took his first wicket for the season with his 4th ball. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers, and apart from A. Apokis, the scorebook wasn't much to look at. Top Scorers: A. Apokis (32), Extras (15). Bowling: Dave Hore (1-11), Terry Nicholson (1-13)
Chasing a small target, and knowing West Ashfield B only had 4 fielders, Terry Nicholson decided to give himself and Matthew Roger a rest from their opening positions and totally reshuffled the batting order. It was a move that almost backfired when John Edgtton (0) and David Lang ((0) first ball) were both dismissed in the first over, bowled by S. Santoro. With the score at 2-1, Nathan Walker (29) and Paul Reece (21) came together at the crease. They saw off S. Santoro (2-13) who C&B Paul Reece off a no ball when he was on 4. At the same time, they took advantage of the gaps in the field and poor bowling from the other end with some big hitting and classy stroke play resulting in a 51 run partnership. After they were both caught out, Ryan Reckerman guided Manly Breakers A to 4-86 with a solid 19 not out, supported by Dave Hore (8no) and giving them a 5 wicket victory. Top Scorers: Nathan Walker (29), Paul Reece (21), Ryan Reckerman (19no). Bowling: S. Santoro (2-13)
