Manly Breakers (1st) v Surry Hills (4th)

Surry Hills scored one of the Winter Comp's biggest upsets in their semi-final win over minor premiers Manly Breakers at Wentworth Park. It was a high scoring match, much like the other semi-final of the division, but Manly fell just short of Surry Hills' imposing 205.

Surry Hills won the toss and batted. Their 205 was a great semi-final socre and they were quite pleased with themselves. Mark Gullickson (44*) showed great temperament and his opening partnership with Jason Lock created a platform for a big score. Irvine Gowans (26) and Silvio Stucci continued the momentum as each batsman chipped in a contribution. The innings finished on 205/5 - a good score on big Wentworth Park. Phil Sweet's 1-14 off 6 overs stopped Surry Hills from really getting away, while 19 wides helped a lot.

"You don't lose with 200 in a semi" is accepted park cricket wisdom but Manly had other ideas, although it's innings did not get off to a great start, losing Mark Hill () in the first over. But some handy partnerships and Chris Sweet in the bank had Manly in with a real chance at the half way stage. Jeff Monin (22) and Phil Sweet (21) made good 20's. When Chris Sweet (42) returned the match was up for grabs, with some thinking that Sweet's presence would be enough to swing the match. But he was brilliantly run out by Punia and the momentum swung back to SH.

Paul McLennan (35) tried gallently to win the match, but the SH bowlers pinned him down and Manly went down by 10 runs, gallent in defeat.
