Presidents Report 2002/03

by Dave Lang

Dave Lang, MBCC President 2002/03 Well, tonight we are here to gather around and celebrate the fruits of our labour (or for perhaps for some of us, – the fruits of our bowling) over what has been the 2002-03 summer of cricket.

And as another chapter has been written in the book according to the Manly Breakers C.C. we have been blessed with a wealth of talent and characters. The 2002-03 season may have passed without that first premiership under out belts, but from the talent we have within our ranks, I'm sure we all agree it is just around the corner.

For the first time 2002-03 saw the Manly Breakers C.C. grow to two teams in the first step in the club's vision to develop into a multi-team club. It was a brave move considering our club had only been existence for a couple of seasons. However with that "Breakers' enthusiasm which has become infectious over this time, it wouldn't be too long before our club would start growing.

For many of us, it's a fire in the belly that burns from July till March . Although over recent years with the availability of the Sydney Morning Winter Competition, the fire burns all year round.

Our club has two teams participating in the Sydney Morning Cricket Association Winter Competition based at Moore Park next to the Sydney Cricket Ground. Terry Nicholson from the B3's is captaining a side in Division 3 with Matt Fisher (B4's) captaining the other in Division 4. At the time of this report going to press, both teams are progressing well.

We certainly welcomed the new guys who played for our club during the season whether it was for one game or for the season.

These new players (some more than others!) added a different complexion to playing cricket. I mean, we learnt last year that you don't just despatch the ball to the boundary, you "Spank the Fruit."

This season, especially from the B4's, we've learnt that one may not only be referred to as a friend, a partner, good cobber, buddy. Mate, you're a UNIT.

To Anthony "C'mon, Give Us A Hug" Brown & Matt "Blitz" Beckett - Thanks.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

On the social scene, our Karaoke Night at the Golden Singapura in downtown Brookvale during the season was a huge success with a good turnout of players & supporters and more laughs aplenty.

The "Spice Boys" or is it the "U-Team" made a guest appearance live on stage which had the whole function room up dancing to their rendition of the Beatles, "I saw Her StandingThere."

No doubt a similar function will have to be penned on our calendars later in the year!

Well, that's about it from me here other than:

Congratulations to...
To all award recipients for the 2002-03 season.
Colin Henderson & Alissa Brown on their engagement during the season
Phil & Kylie Sweet who celebrated their marriage during the season

A special word of thanks...
Phil Sweet & Mark Hill in doing a great job leading their respective teams onto the field each week in our first year with two teams.
Mark Hill for his never-ending work behind-the-scenes in securing sponsorship & club sports wear. I'm sure you'll agree, wearing those "Breakers" training shirts certainly makes heads turn.
Fellow members of the MBCC Committee: Mark Hill, Phil Sweet, Pat Ryan & Paul McLennan.

Appreciation...
a BIG thank you to our gold sponsor, the Brookvale Hotel. Without the support of Michael Paterson, Blake Andreas and the Kelly Group our club would not have functioned as successful as it does.
Roger Moore for his hard work efforts during the season in getting our website back into action. Thanks Rog.
All players & associate members, friends & supporters of the Manly Breakers who help make our club what it is today

Wishing everyone all the best for 2003.

Yours in cricket......
David Lang
President, Manly Breakers Cricket Club

Well, there's a word that moved me when a boy
That moves today,
It's when the umpire, to the general joy,
Pronounces "PLAY!"
        -Andrew Lang: 'Play!'
