B3 Captains Report 2002/03

by Phil Sweet

Phil Sweet, MBCC B3 Captain 2002/03 Hello and welcome to my first end of season report as captain of a Manly Breakers team. It's nice to be able to say " a Manly Breakers team " after only three years as a club. It shows the hard work and persistence of all involved has paid off!

Before I start I'd like to wish all those involved in the winter competition all the best. I'd also like to wish Skiddy good luck in his new off-season role as Assistant Coach of a womens' netball team! (I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions!)

I was very happy to be elected captain of the team and the my main aim was to assist all who play the game to enjoy it (and of course win a few games!!) and I hope I have helped a few guys to do that.

We started the season with a unique win. With a team of guys, many who hadn't met each other before, we won in a close finish with Chris Sweet finishing with the amazing statistic of taking all ten wickets to fall!! Unfortunately, we could not maintain our form and playing short a couple of times didn't help, however, we were helped out on a number of occasions by guys from the B4's and thanks goes to them and skipper Mark Hill for all their assistance.

Despite being a little inconsistent we won some very good games and having Paul McLennan and Terry Nicholson with over 200 runs and Chris and myself with over 300, it shows we put up some good scores throughout the season. You can't win games without taking wickets and all the bowlers tried hard.

The change in Nathan Peterson was amazing to watch as the old rhythm returned and he was very unlucky not to take more wickets. Ryan Reckerman showed all the potential he has promised this season with some fiery, accurate spells of bowling and his figures this year show how well he bowled. New recruit Dave Hore proved invaluable with the new ball (and handy with the bat) and Chris Sweet topped the figures as usual, and despite not feeling quite up to his old self could always be relied on to bowl tight for long spells.

It's definitely worth noting in this era of sledging in cricket that the most aggressive sledge by an opposing team member to Chris Sweet all season led to a wealth of new nicknames, not only for him but for some of the more mature members of the B3's squad. The sledge " f*****g fat old pensioner" had us in stitches and provided plenty of amusement for the remainder of the season.

I'm pretty sure that we were all a little disappointed to miss out on the semis' but I'm also sure that as all the guys play more matches together for the club, success will surely follow and I look forward to being able to share that success with all of you.

A big thanks to my Vice Captain, Justin Barbaroux, who also had his first year at the club. Despite being a little disappointed with his own form, he will prove a valuable player for the club in the future. Thanks mate!

On a personal note I'd like to thank my wife, Kylie, for all her patience with me (not just during the season either). She helped me out with getting players when we were short early on and special thanks goes to Sean Keys, Clive Hulbert, Daret Gooch and Steve Barrell who despite only playing one game made a big difference to all those they helped out. I'd also like to thank Ian North for the last game partnership, I couldn't have got the ton without you mate, cheers!

Thank you all, GO THE BREAKERS!!!!!

B3 Captain
