Presidents Report 2001/02

But whatever conclusions we may arrive at, looking around our club, one thing I've seen we all agree on is looking forward to playing in the maroon, gold and blue for the 2002/03 season.
As "new kids on the block" our inaugural season in the M.W.C.A. was quite successful considering we were still finding our way as a new club. Missing out on a finals berth by not much in sour first and second seasons will, and I believe should, spur our club on to attain greater heights over the 2002/03 summer, in order for us to achieve those inaugral premiership(s) we so desire. Which, perhaps, can only be achieved by the bitter taste of past defeats.
Either way we llok at it, the 2001-02 season did pass with plenty of memorable moments. The addtion of five new players joining our ranks added some handy firepower to various matches. We also welcomed back Mark Hill ("Hilly!!") to our ranks after playing district grade cricket with Southern Lakes D.C.C. in the Newcastle District Grade Competition.
There were some screamer catches taken this year. One in particular by Paul McLennan, diving in the outfield to dismiss Narraweena's top scoring batsman down at Passmore in Round 9; Ian ("Northy") North's handy score of 30 in the last round against Harbord at Tania Park; and of course, Chris ("Scuffs") Sweet's century (115*) against Long Reef C.C. up at Mona Vale on Australia Day. Special mention to newcomer to our club this season, James Foyes. His eforts in the field over the season were commendable.
We've certainlly had a few (a few?) - no, a lot of laughs along the way. By the end of the season I's reckon any team in the MWCA playing at Nolans, Tania or Passmore knew where the Manly Breakers were playing just by hearing the catch cry of "SPANK THE FRUIT" reverberating around any number of the grounds in the district! Thanks, Browny.
On the social scene, our Karaoke Night at the Golden Singapore in downtown Brookvale during the season was a huge success, with a good turnout of players & supporters with more laughs aplenty.
Whilst on the social side, this year the club saw a change of Clkub Championship from a Double Wicket to the Presidents Cup "Presidents XI v Captain's XI". This was played at one of the club's preferred grounds, Balgowlah Oval, and was ultimately won by the Captain's XI. Well done Fish!!
At the time of publishing this report, our club had entered a team in the Sydney Morning Winter Competition for a second year. And I'm happy to report after one round completed our club has one win. A gutsy woin in the true Breakers spirit.
Well, that's about it from me this season, other than:
Congratulations to...
Chris Sweet as this season's "Cricketer of the Year". Roger Moore as this year's "Club Person of the Year" and the club's other award recipants for their contribution this season.
A special word of thanks...
Mark Hill,
for his assistance through all of the 2001/02 season.
Matt Fisher ("Fish"), on taking the "Breakers" through the 2001/02 season.
Members of the MBCC Committee for their assistance during those committee meetings at West Pymble, and who with Rob "Cutlets" Herne and Chris "Browny" Brown kindly provided me with
transportation whilst awaiting delivery of my own! It was much appreciated.
To our loyal supporters Kylie, Helen and Gaylyn, who came along to many of our games during
the season. Thanks for your support.
Wishing everyone all the best, and see you all next season.
Yours in cricket......
